ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Stanford Wong is a recognised authority on the game of blackjack having been a player and student of the game for 40 years. He has written many books about gambling but Professional Blackjack is his most famous, often described as the Bible for serious blackjack players. He continues to play and write and resides in California.REVIEW
There are two schools of thought about Stanford Wong’s Professional Blackjack. The first says that his blackjack book is dull, humourless, steeped in complex mathematics and somewhat outdated. The second says that he shows the competent blackjack player how to win and win quietly and that his study of the hi-lo count system is peerless. These two opposing points of view are quite easily explained. The beginner/novice blackjack player might fall into the first school of thought. Stanford Wong does not cover blackjack deck penetration or basic strategy in any sort of detail in this book and does not pad it out with hilarious real-life blackjack tales from the casinos. These are all topics that would appeal to a beginner and to those not used to the casino environment.
Competent and professional blackjack students are much less interested in casino fables and certainly do not want to pay good money for a book that teaches them to suck eggs. For those players who are already looking at counting strategies and who regularly play the game of blackjack to win, Professional Blackjack is one of the best reference guides in print.
In our opinion, if you have heard negative reviews about this book, they are more than likely to have come from a novice blackjack player, someone not ready to take on board the complexities of hi-lo counting and its many rule changes and variations. Professional Blackjack is NOT for the novice player and should not be read by them. We would suggest Best Blackjack by Frank Scoblete as our best pick for the blackjack beginner - it's designed for the novice.
If you already know how to count cards, this book will most definitely be an invaluable guide to you. If you want to use the hi-lo system of counting, this book is the first and last you will ever need. As a blackjack reference guide, it contains the most comprehensive hi-lo count charts available for many different sets of rules and strategy changes. Without doubt a dry read but one specifically designed for those of you who have heard all the blackjack stories (perhaps you’ve been a part of them) and are much more interested in learning from the bare data and expected values so that you can take it to the blackjack tables next time you play. Blackjack novices stay away – Card Counters must own this one!
